چکیده

The CubeSat Proximity Operations Demonstration (CPOD) mission led by Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems leverages several formation flying techniques to enable rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking with two identical 3U CubeSats. Tyvak developed a unique relative navigation payload that includes delta GPS, inter-satellite link with radio ranging, two infrared imagers, and two visible imagers. A cold gas propulsion system is integrated into the vehicle for translational maneuvers. A high performance attitude determination and control system was developed to enable maneuvering and relative pointing. While cost was kept low with the use of commercial off the shelf components and selective redundancy, the integration of new rendezvous and docking components necessitated a significant investment in testing and integrated system performance verification. Approach trajectories remain passively safe through the use of “walking safety ellipses” that include radial and cross track orbital offsets. This paper presents the challenges of rendezvous, proximity operation, and docking for CubeSat vehicles, lessons learned from the CPOD mission, and an update on CPOD mission status.

Application for RSO Automated Proximity Analysis and IMAging (ARAPAIMA): Development of a Nanosat-based Space Situational Awareness Mission

ARAPAIMA is a proximity operations mission sponsored by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), to perform the in-orbit demonstration of autonomous proximity operations for visible, infrared, and point cloud generation of resident space objects (RSOs) from a nanosat platform. The nanosat is of the 6U CubeSat class, with overall dimens...

TriDAR Test Results Onboard Final Shuttle Mission, Applications for Future of Non-Cooperative Autonomous Rendezvous & Docking

This paper presents results from the final Space Shuttle test flight of the TriDAR vision system onboard Shuttle Atlantis on STS-135. The TriDAR (Triangulation + LIDAR) is a proximity operations 3D vision system for Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking (AR&D) missions to non-cooperative targets in space. The TriDAR has previously flown on STS-128 and STS-131 onboard Shuttle Discovery. The objectiv...

Using Cubesat/micro-satellite Technology to Demonstrate the Autonomous Assembly of a Reconfigurable Space Telescope (aarest)

Future space telescopes with diameter over 20 m will require new approaches: either high-precision formation flying or in-orbit assembly. We believe the latter holds promise at a potentially lower cost and more practical solution in the near term, provided much of the assembly can be carried out autonomously. To gain experience, and to provide risk reduction, we propose a combined mico/nano-sat...

On-ground tele-operation and on-board autonomous control for the ETS-VII’s rendezvous docking and space robot experiments

In the near future space activities, the in-orbit servicing capability which means transportation of logistics, maintenance of spacecraft and assist of scientific activities such as space experiments are highly required. These work will be partly conducted by astronauts and manned spacecraft. However, most of these works should be done by unmanned spacecraft and robots from the safety and cost ...

Uncooperative Rendezvous and Docking for MicroSats 1 The case for CleanSpace One

This paper proposes a solution to perform active debris removal with a cost effective microsatellite. A complex aspect of debris removal in space is the detection and positive identification of the debris, medium to close approach as well as the orbital rendezvous and following on-site operations. These aspects will require a mix of several technologies, some of which already exist, and some of...
